JPS Construction and Design, Inc. is a custom residential design build firm. The JPS design team’s core value is to have a positive impact on your life, the surrounding neighborhood and the community at large. Each project is treated as a new challenge that requires a different solution each time. Our goal is to serve our clients to create the perfect solution to their project that meets their requirements in every way and where a “house” becomes a “home”.
As a Rhode Island based design and build company, we have responded to our client’s desire to work with one coordinated team from concept to completion by building out our capabilities through a highly skilled team of designers led by Sue Horwitz, who is a licensed architect.
Many of our clients come to us with photos, clippings or simply home design ideas they may have as inspiration for their future project. We take those ideas and convert them into a workable home remodeling or new home construction project.
As a design build firm, we have extensive experience taking a project from initial design sketches, through to construction documents that are then used on the job site to convert the design into a reality during the construction process. Whether you use JPS as your home building contractor, or you have your own contractor, our in house Design Team is ready to assist you every step of the way to ensure a smooth and stress-free design experience. We intentionally separate the design contract from the construction contract, to provide you as much choice and flexibility as possible. Many clients, however, appreciate the seamless process that JPS design and build offers, as it allows our Project Managers to collaborate with the design staff throughout the design and building process. This results in the project being efficiently run, on budget and within schedule.
Our experienced team is both academically and field trained in architecture, with an emphasis on custom home remodeling, historic home renovations, space planning, and interior design. Whether you’re looking for new home design ideas, simply want to spruce up a residential interior, or anything in between, our team can deliver design concepts and construction plans inspired by your goals and objectives for the space, and most importantly, within your budget.
CUSTOM HOME DESIGN

The custom home design process involves multiple project phases.
These project phases are made seamless, because the JPS team is equipped with the right mix of experience to walk you through the entire process from concept to the finishing touches. The process starts with schematic design, where we take your thoughts and ideas, and propose two to three potential rough plans to show you the relationship of the different spaces to each other, building proportions, flow and functionality. During this phase, we will also highlight any special features of the existing structure or surrounding areas. These concepts are reviewed with you to help you decide which option the JPS team should develop. Once the design is established, the JPS team moves into design development, where the design is further refined, including identifying room sizes, door and window locations, functional layout of cabinetry, plumbing and electrical needs and other design details. Following client approval, the JPS team will prepare a set of construction documents, including a review by a structural engineer. At the end of the construction document phase, the drawings are ready to be submitted for a building permit. Throughout the design process, the JPS team will submit applications to historic commissions, zoning boards and other applicable agencies if required for your project.
The JPS Design Team offers three dimensional (3D) renderings to help you envision the design with greater detail and clarity. These renderings help to visualize the relationship between the different rooms, lighting effects, shadows, and finish materials and will help you gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the finished project.

Finally, JPS offers a complete interior design service to assist with selection of everything from building finishes to furnishings.

Interior finishes are critical to the construction schedule because they often have long lead times and will need to be made well before the space is completely built. They can include items such as hardwood flooring, tile, countertops, cabinets, custom built-ins and millwork styles, fireplaces, plumbing fixtures, and custom glass, etc.
As the building nears completion, the JPS team can assist you in the design of the interior spaces and may include the selection of paint colors, furniture, carpets, window treatments, light fixtures and lamps, artwork and accent pieces. This is where you will have the opportunity to add your own personal touches to every aspect of your new residential interior.
Another advantage of working with the JPS Design Team is that our team partners with the Aquidneck Design Center, a newly formed collaborative effort from some of the area’s best suppliers of these types of finish products. The Aquidneck Design Center in Portsmouth, RI can be found within two buildings comprising over five thousand square feet of showrooms in one location right on the island.

We worked with JPS Construction and design on a large renovation of a dated contemporary waterfront house. They worked closely with us and our architect in the design phase to ensure our vision was brought to life. Through phone, text, and email, JPS was in constant contact and many on site questions could be answered in a timely manner through the use of photos. Our new house is spectacular and couldn’t have been done without the hard work of JPS Construction and Design. We look forward to working with them again on future projects.

I share a narrow walkway with my neighbor that I use multiple times a day, often with my big, energetic dog, to enter and exit my condo. We had a unique and challenging situation from the start- wanting the old original character and charm (and quirks) of our home to smoothly flow into the new plan. The result is spot on and we love everything about the design. The team was so knowledgeable and incredibly patient with us during the process! Kitchen remodel. JPS demolished the existing kitchen including the floor and removed a section of wall. The project included new cabinets, plumbing, electrical, flooring, and granite countertops. The work was done to our total satisfaction. It was done on budget, on time and in a professional manner. We will use JPS again for any future projects and recommend them enthusiastically.
Each step of this process has been excellent. After many house projects, I am experienced in how the process can go south quickly. I have never been sad to say goodbye to a crew – until this project! We love JPS Construction!!! We hired JPS to do a total reconstruction of our home. The project started in October and we anticipate the finish time is estimated for September. JPS put an addition on, and pretty much rehabbed our entire 90 year old beach house. From planning stages to completion, we’ve been extremely happy and we absolutely love our new home. Jamie has assembled an amazing team – from Sue and her design team, to our project manager Julian and his team, we’ve been so impressed. Everyone listened, offered suggestions along the way, and worked with us to make sure they gave us what we wanted. We were afraid we’d lose the unique charm of the original house, and instead in the end, they enhanced it.
